Songs: The Future Is Amazing
notes / gigs / releasesIn the future...
Everybody will eat Hummus
And there's computers in every home
There'll be a thing called Google
That'll tell you anything you need to know
Every single album on a matchbox-sized device
A hundred TV channels, all of which you can rewind
The future sounds amazing
The future's bloody great
The future is all there for you
I don't think I can wait
You'll have a piece of plastic
That you'll use instead of cash
And another piece in your pocket
That's a phone, a calculator and map
Machines that answer phone calls
Machines that do the washing up
A new series of Doctor Who
That's really really good
The future sounds amazing
The future's bloody great
The future is all there for you
I don't think I can wait
The future sounds amazing
The future's bloody great
The future is all there for you
I don't think I can wait
Do we ever kick the Tories out?
I bet they never come back
And do they make more Star Wars films?
I bet that they're not crap
Will we all be on TV?
Yes, it's called YouTube
I bet everybody's supportive
And very rarely rude
The future sounds amazing
The future's bloody great
The future is all there for me
I don't think I can wait
The future is all there for me
Maybe you should wait

This one took a bit of writing to get write - I had to have a good old think about what things should be in the list (though including Hummus in a song is, I always think, a WINNER) and then went through a few different tunes before coming up with this one (which had previously been attached to another song) and THEN a few different arrangements to get it right. The key moment when it worked was Steve deciding to play it SARCASTICALLY for the first two verses then changing his mind when he hears about Doctor Who. It's a character journey!
The Validators recorded a version of this song during the sessions for Still Valid, but it never really worked, despite having a LOVELY "flute" solo (actually Tom's violin, super-treated). Maybe we shall return to it one day!
